By 2025, China aims to have 100 of these underwater data center blocks in place. This ambitious project is viewed as a smart solution to save valuable land space. To put it into perspective, this would free up an estimated 732,000 square feet of potential construction space on land.
What's more, the natural properties of seawater offer a unique advantage. Used as a cooling system for the data centers, seawater has the potential to save approximately 122 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This is innovation with a nod to environmental responsibility.
Of course, creating underwater data centers isn't without its challenges. These facilities have to be constructed to endure the pressure and corrosiveness of seawater.
Is This a First?
The concept of underwater data centers isn't entirely new. In 2016, Microsoft tested the waters with a similar concept. However, China is now laying claim to the first commercial underwater data center – the Hainan Undersea Data Center.
Located off the coast of Sanya, in the Hainan Province, the data center is a testament to forward-thinking tech solutions. Each center is meticulously designed to manage an impressive equivalent of 60,000 PCs worth of data and is built to last as long as 25 years.
However, the impacts of this novel approach on marine ecosystems remain to be seen. How the electronics will affect marine life is still an unanswered question.
