A 29-year-old man named Noland Arbaugh became the first human participant to experience Neuralink's technology. Unfortunately, a diving accident left him paralysed from the shoulders down. Despite his condition, he could use his mind to control a computer screen cursor thanks to the brain implant.
What can he do with the implant?
Arbaugh has demonstrated his ability to play computer chess and the video game “Civilization” using the implant. He has also been taking language lessons, which he navigates using only his thoughts for cursor control. He remarked that the implant system aligns perfectly with his intent when he thinks about moving the cursor.
When was the procedure?
Neuralink installed the brain implant in Arbaugh in January. The procedure went well and he was discharged from the hospital a day after the implant installation. Impressively, he reported no cognitive impairment from the procedure.
